Orthodontic Emergencies

We’re Here When You Need Us
Orthodontic emergencies are uncommon, but problems with braces or other orthodontic appliances can occasionally occur.
If you experience severe pain or have a painful appliance problem that you cannot manage comfortably on your own, contact Burke Family Orthodontics.
Our team can provide guidance and schedule an appointment if needed. Some orthodontic problems can be managed temporarily to make you more comfortable until you are able to visit our office.
Even if you are able to relieve the discomfort, please contact us so we can determine whether an appointment is needed.
A loose, broken, or damaged appliance may need to be repaired promptly to help keep your orthodontic treatment on track.
General Soreness It is normal to experience some tenderness after braces are first placed or following certain adjustments. Your teeth may feel sensitive when biting or chewing for a few days. Choosing softer foods until the tenderness improves can make eating more comfortable.
Your lips, cheeks, or tongue may also become irritated as your mouth adjusts to your braces. Orthodontic wax can be placed over a bracket or other area that is causing irritation. This discomfort usually improves as your mouth becomes accustomed to the braces.
If you experience severe or persistent pain, contact our office so we can determine whether you need to be seen. Loose Bracket or Band If a bracket or band becomes loose, contact our office so we can schedule an appointment to have it reattached as soon as possible.
If it remains attached to the wire, leave it in place and use orthodontic wax if needed for comfort until your appointment. If the bracket or band comes completely off, place it in a small plastic bag or envelope and bring it with you to your appointment.
Loose or Poking Wire
Occasionally, an orthodontic wire may shift or begin to irritate your cheek or gums. If a wire is poking you, place orthodontic wax over the irritating area to make it more comfortable temporarily.
Contact our office if the wire is loose, has moved out of position, or continues to cause discomfort. Our team can provide guidance and determine whether an appointment is needed.
Loose or Uncomfortable Appliance
If an orthodontic appliance becomes loose or begins rubbing or poking the inside of your mouth, orthodontic wax may help protect the irritated area temporarily. Do not try to force a loose or damaged appliance back into position. Contact our office so we can determine the appropriate next step and arrange an appointment if necessary.
Headgear Concerns
If you experience problems or unusual discomfort while wearing orthodontic headgear, refer to the instructions provided by our office and contact us if you have questions. If any part of the headgear becomes bent, damaged, or no longer fits as instructed, stop wearing it and contact our office for guidance rather than trying to adjust or repair it yourself.
Lost or Broken Retainer
If your retainer is lost, broken, or no longer fits properly, contact our office as soon as possible. Teeth can begin to shift when a retainer isn’t worn as directed, so it’s important to have the problem addressed promptly. Our team can determine whether your retainer needs to be adjusted, repaired, or replaced.
